Many writers face a lot of confusion about how they earn money after publishing on Amazon. Most writers who join Amazon Publishing excited about putting out their book, end up confused on Amazon regarding where all their earnings have gone. They published. They made some sales. The royalties? They could either be less than expected or be caught in the settings that they didn’t understand when they joined Amazon.
It is an occurrence that is more common than people would like to admit. It is not because the platform is set up to scam you; it is simply because no one explained the important stuff to you prior to publishing.
Knowing these considerations will enable an author to make the right publishing decision.
Why Are Your Royalties Smaller Than You Expected?
This is something many novice writers find out the difficult way: getting your book on Amazon is easy. Getting it done right, in a way that actually helps you earn money, is an entirely different ball game.
As one basic illustration, take price setting. Amazon KDP offers two different royalty percentages based on how much you price your eBook. Any eBook set within $2.99 and $9.99 range receives a 70% royalty percentage in eligible markets. Price it lower than $2.99 or higher than $10.00, and you only receive a 35% royalty.Pricing models such as these remain unknown to many authors before publishing.
But then there are delivery charges which silently erode your 70 percent by deducting a small amount per megabyte depending on the size of your file. Most of the time this will not be too much, but if you have books with a lot of pictures, it can add up.
There is also KDP Select participation. If you enroll, you will gain access to some promotional opportunities and you become part of Kindle Unlimited, but you also lock yourself in the Amazon platform since you cannot sell your eBook anywhere else while you are enrolled. While some authors find this useful, others might overlook its weaknesses.
Nothing about this is hidden in the fine print; everything is disclosed. Technically, anyway. But when you are in the process of uploading your manuscript and filling up some forms, these things quickly get blurred.
Many authors use book publishing services to gain more insight into how pricing and distribution affect their income.
What Happens with Print Books and Where Does the Money Go?
There’s digital royalties for that. Print royalties, on the other hand, become a bit trickier — and where authors usually experience the discrepancy between their initial expectations about earnings and actual figures.
In case of the KDP Print program, your print royalties are calculated by Amazon as your list price less printing expenses. Printing expenses are determined by number of pages in the book, choice of either black-and-white or color printing and market your book was printed at. Should you set your price in a way that doesn’t take into consideration all of the above, your royalties may become as low as a dollar per book sold or even zero.
This is precisely why it is important to talk about cheap book printing in self publishing services. Making the most economical choice without taking into account the connection between it and your royalty calculations may seem cost-effective until you realize how much you pay for each of your sales.
Optimal print strategy should be made based on the balance between production cost and your list price. Only when both figures are calculated right, royalties start making sense.
How Do Professional Publishers Actually Protect Your Earnings?
Here comes the importance of obtaining pre-publication rather than post-publication assistance.
Professional publishing teams take care of all the components that most authors ignore while setting up a book for publication. Such components include pricing strategy, category selection, metadata optimization, territory configuration, and many more. These components are not only important to perform a set of actions but also have direct influence on the visibility of the book and its earnings.
Professional publishers know how Amazon algorithms react to the particular configuration of the book. If a book is configured with proper metadata and correct category settings, it will be found by more readers. More visibility means more purchases. Purchases with a good royalty structure mean that your earnings are proportional to the efforts that you made creating the book.
And when it comes to Canadian authors, using one of the best self-publishing companies in Canada becomes crucial because now you deal with people who know the peculiarities of the Canadian market, know how Canadian readers buy books, know how to position books on Amazon in American and Canadian markets, and so on.
Are You Giving Away Rights You Did Not Mean To?
Your rights and royalties are connected in such a way as to be a concern for most authors only when some problem occurs.
Copyright remains yours as the author – no matter how you publish with Amazon. However, there are other rights you have to consider – distribution rights, format rights and territorial rights. These issues need to be sorted out each time you work with a publishing service. Do you give away exclusive rights to distribute? Is it just eBook or all formats? And do these rights extend to all countries?
This may appear to be a small matter in the beginning, but the financial aspect of the issue is huge. Giving away worldwide distribution rights even if you want to sell only in North America, will certainly influence your further plans to license/sell these rights.
The best publishing service provider will ensure that all these aspects are covered before anything else, and that happens because in the long run, protecting your rights means protecting your income.
In order to better manage money and publishing process, for writers seeking professional assistance, amazon kdp publishing services can assist in managing critical aspects of publishing, including pricing, metadata, categories, and distribution settings. These elements have an impact on both visibility and revenue.
It is also one of the reasons why authors opt for help from publishing companies.
Get It Right From the Start, Make More Money
The authors that make the most money through Amazon Publishing are not the authors who know the most about technology. Rather, they are those authors who took the time to figure out how the publishing business works before they launched – or hired someone to do so for them.
Your book is a result of hard work, and you should be earning royalties that show it.
